Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Oweize (the "Service"), including our mobile applications (iOS and Android) and website (web.oweize.com), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.

These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you ("User," "you," "your") and Oweize ("we," "us," "our").

2. Description of Service

Oweize is a personal finance management application that provides expense splitting (track shared expenses with friends and groups, calculate who owes whom, and record settlements) and budget tracking (connect bank accounts via Plaid, track income and expenses by category, set spending targets, and view financial insights).

Important: Oweize is a record-keeping and budgeting tool only. The Service does not process payments, move money, or act as a financial institution. It does not verify that payments or settlements actually occurred. It does not provide financial, tax, investment, credit, or legal advice. It does not guarantee the accuracy of any data, calculations, categorizations, or AI-extracted information.

Users are solely responsible for verifying all information entered into or imported into the Service and for making payments through external services (e.g., Venmo, Zelle, bank transfers, cash).

3. Eligibility

To use Oweize, you must:

  • Be at least 13 years old (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction).
  • Have the legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement.
  • Not be prohibited from using the Service under applicable law.
  • Provide true, accurate, and complete registration information.

4. Account Registration and Security

To create an account, you must provide a valid email address and complete email verification, provide a valid phone number and complete SMS verification, and complete your profile with your full name and preferred currency. You may optionally connect via Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials, all activity that occurs under your account, and notifying us immediately of any unauthorized access or security breach.

Each user may maintain only one active account. Creating multiple accounts to abuse referrals, trials, or other features is prohibited. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or pose a security risk.

5. User Conduct and Acceptable Use

5.1 Prohibited Activities

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any illegal purpose or in violation of any applicable law.
  • Impersonate any person or entity or misrepresent your affiliation with anyone.
  • Harass, threaten, defraud, or harm other users.
  • Upload viruses, malware, or malicious code.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, other accounts, or computer systems.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Service (except as expressly permitted by law).
  • Use the Service to facilitate illegal gambling, money laundering, or terrorist financing.
  • Upload content that infringes intellectual property rights or violates privacy.
  • Use automated systems (bots, scrapers) to access the Service without permission.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service or servers.

5.2 User-Generated Content

You retain ownership of content you upload (receipts, statements, notes, etc.). By uploading, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, store, and process that content solely to provide the Service. You represent that you have all necessary rights to upload and share such content.

5.3 Shared Expenses and Disputes

You are responsible for accurately recording expenses and settlements. Oweize does not verify, guarantee, or enforce any debt, IOU, or settlement record. Disputes between users regarding shared expenses must be resolved directly between the parties. We reserve the right to remove or anonymize content that violates these Terms or poses a legal risk.

6. Financial Data and Plaid Integration

By connecting your bank account via Plaid, you authorize Oweize to access your bank account information (names, types, balances, credit limits), retrieve transaction history (up to 730 days) with merchant names, amounts, dates, and locations, and receive ongoing updates via Plaid webhooks.

You acknowledge that Plaid, not Oweize, facilitates the connection to your financial institution. You are subject to Plaid's End User Privacy Statement and Terms of Use. You may disconnect your bank account at any time through the app. We encrypt Plaid access tokens at rest and revoke them upon disconnection or account deletion.

We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of data received from Plaid or your financial institution. You should verify all imported transactions and balances before relying on them.

7. AI-Powered Features

Oweize uses AI (Claude Sonnet 4.5 via AWS Bedrock) to extract data from receipts and bank statements. You acknowledge that AI extraction may be inaccurate, incomplete, or erroneous. You are solely responsible for reviewing and verifying all AI-extracted data. Financial documents containing sensitive data are processed by AI within the configured AWS region.

AI-generated categorizations, insights, or suggestions do not constitute financial, tax, accounting, or legal advice. Consult a qualified professional for such advice.

8. Subscription, Trials, and Payments

Basic expense-splitting features are free. Budget tracking features require a subscription or trial. Access is granted via free trials, redemption codes, or referral bonuses.

Oweize does not process payments within the app. We do not integrate any payment gateway, do not store credit card numbers or payment credentials, and manage subscription access via API-granted trials, admin-generated redemption codes, and referral bonuses.

We reserve the right to modify or terminate the referral program at any time. Abuse of the referral program (e.g., self-referrals, fake accounts) may result in account termination. Redemption codes are non-transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash.

9. Privacy and Data Protection

Your use of the Service is subject to our Privacy Policy, which explains how we collect, use, and disclose your personal information. By using the Service, you consent to the practices described in the Privacy Policy.

10. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE; THAT DATA WILL BE ACCURATE, COMPLETE, OR TIMELY; THAT DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED; OR THAT THE SERVICE WILL MEET YOUR SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS.

THE SERVICE DOES NOT PROVIDE FINANCIAL, TAX, INVESTMENT, CREDIT, OR LEGAL ADVICE. OWEIZE DOES NOT PROCESS PAYMENTS, MOVE MONEY, OR ACT AS A FINANCIAL INSTITUTION. WE DO NOT VERIFY, GUARANTEE, OR ENFORCE ANY DEBT, IOU, OR SETTLEMENT RECORD.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, OWEIZE AND ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, AND AFFILIATES SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, BUSINESS, OR GOODWILL, OR ANY DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO OWEIZE IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR $100 CAD IF YOU HAVE NOT PAID ANYTHING.

Some jurisdictions do not permit certain warranty disclaimers or liability limitations. If you are a consumer in such a jurisdiction, the above limitations may not fully apply to you. Nothing in these Terms is intended to limit or waive rights that cannot be limited or waived under applicable law.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Oweize and its officers, directors, employees, agents, and affiliates from any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, your violation of any rights of another person or entity, your content, or your disputes with other users regarding shared expenses.

12. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time. You may request deletion of your account by contacting us or using the in-app deletion feature.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account at our sole discretion, with or without notice, for any reason, including violation of these Terms, suspicion of fraud or illegal activity, extended inactivity, or security concerns.

Upon termination, your right to use the Service immediately ceases. We will delete or anonymize your data as described in our Privacy Policy. Some information may be retained as described in the Privacy Policy.

13. Dispute Resolution

Before filing a formal dispute, you agree to contact us at support@oweize.com and attempt to resolve the issue informally. We will respond within 30 days.

These Terms are governed by the laws of Ontario, Canada, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any legal action arising from these Terms or the Service shall be brought in the courts of Ontario, Canada, unless you are a consumer in another jurisdiction where local law requires otherwise.

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, YOU AGREE THAT ANY DISPUTE WILL BE CONDUCTED ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS ONLY AND NOT IN A CLASS, CONSOLIDATED, OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION. IF THIS WAIVER IS FOUND UNENFORCEABLE, THIS ENTIRE CLASS ACTION WAIVER SHALL BE VOID.

14. Modifications to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the date at the top of this page, posting an in-app notice or banner, or sending an email notification. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the modified Terms. If you do not agree, you must stop using the Service.

15. Miscellaneous

  • Entire Agreement: These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Oweize regarding the Service.
  • Severability: If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.
  • Waiver: Our failure to enforce any right or provision shall not constitute a waiver of those rights or provisions.
  • Assignment: You may not assign your rights under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights without restriction.
  • Third-Party Beneficiaries: Plaid Inc. is an intended third-party beneficiary of Section 6 (Financial Data and Plaid Integration). No other third parties have rights under these Terms.
